OUTLOOK EXPRESS EMAIL SETUP

Hopefully this will help you understand HOW to setup Outlook Express to receive your incoming email.

Let me make one point though.  If you have the capability of getting your email from your providers web page, you would be much better of, rather than downloading them to your computer's hard drive!  WHY??

1) Your email provider (yahoo, google, msn etc) scans the email for any and all problems.

2) By doing this, you are pretty much guaranteed to keep problems OUT of your computer and OFF of your hard drive!

3) Your email provider automatically backs up YOUR email EVERY night!  If you where to lose a hard drive, your email AND your address book are safe, because they weren't on your hard drive WHEN it crashes.  There's never an IF, always a WHEN!  It will happen, 100% GUARANTEED!

OK, so if you like what I wrote here, and want to do it MY WAY, then just close out the page.  If you are still bound and determined to bring all the email into your PC and onto the hard drive, then read on.

In order to receive email into Outlook Express, it must be configured correctly and you will need the following information to accomplish this:

Here is what Outlook Express looks like when you open it up.  Take notice of the MENUS across the top, from LEFT to RIGHT

FILE     EDIT     VIEW     TOOLS     MESSAGE     HELP

We will be dealing with the TOOLS MENU ONLY

Here's where we are going to 1st REMOVE an old email account.  Notice, I clicked the TOOL menu then ACCOUNTS menu.  IF there are ANY old email accounts that no longer work, HIGHLIGHT them one-at-a-time and click REMOVE, located in the RIGHT HAND COLUMN.  Use this web page as an example while you perform the procedure.

REMEMBER - ONCE REMOVED, IT IS GONE! BE CAREFUL AND BE "SURE" YOU WANT IT TO BE GONE BEFORE YOU CLICK REMOVE!

THERE IS NO TURNING BACK IF YOU CLICK "YES!"

Now it's time to ADD a NEW account.  Click ADD

Type in your NAME here, then click NEXT . . . .

Here's where you type in the NEW email address you want.  If you a yahoo email user, then your email ends in @yahoo.com, if your use msn, or hotmail, then it looks like @hotmail.com

Type your CORRECT email here NOW, then click NEXT . . . .

In this screen you will need to know the incoming POP3 email that your email provider is using for your email account, and to get the mail to go back out, you will also need to know the OUTGOING email server name.

As an example, I use FATCOW as my email provider, so the POP3 reads pop.fatcow.com but I use Mediacom cable internet to connect to the internet and use THERE OUTGOING email server.  That looks like this: mail.mchsi.com

Without this information Outlook Express WILL NOT WORK!

If you click the DOWN ARROW to the LEFT of POP3, you will see other choices.  This document is dealing with POP3 ONLY.  Check with your email provider for the most up to date information!

Here you will need to type in your account name AND password.  Make SURE the REMEMBER PASSWORD remains checked!  If this information is incorrect, you will NEVER log in and get your email!

All done!  Click FINISH and give it a try.  If the email FAILS, then one of the steps above are wrong.
