HOW TO RECORD (BURN) A CD-R

You have the NERO software package on your PC and Laptop for recording (aka burning) a cd-r.

To begin, take a BLANK CD-R cd and put it in your CD-R Burner of your Desktop or Laptop PC.

Usually, the 2nd drive on a Desktop PC is the CD-R Burner.

Next, look for the NERO ICON on your DESKTOP or maybe on your

TASKBAR and click it to open it.

Here is the opening shot of the NERO main screen

Here is the ICON to click in NERO to record a DATA CD

With the DATA icon chosen, you have the opportunity to record a CD-R or a DVD-R providing you have a DVD-R burner installed in your PC.

The biggest advantage to having a DVD-R burner vs. a CD-R burner is the amount of storage space.  The CD-R can hold around 645MB (645 MILLION BYTES) of data, whereas a DVD-R will hold 7 or 8 GB ( 7 or 8 Billion Bytes) of data.

As an example, on my computer in My Documents folder, if I want to record all of the DATA in this directory, it will take 3 or maybe 4 CD-R's.  I can use 1 DVD-R and record this entire directory as well as 90% of the rest of my hard drive's data directories!

When you chose to record a CD-R, this screen appeared.  Here is where you will ADD the files and/or directories you want to record (BURN) onto a CD-R or DVD-R.  You'll click the ADD button

The next screen appears and you find yourself in My Documents folder.  This is where it will ALWAYS open to when it is first opened.

If, on the other hand, you wanted a different directory, drive, or folder, then you'd click MY COMPUTER and then choose the drive where the files/folders that you want to record data from are located.

Here I am choosing to go to some directories on my "C" drive.  I double click to OPEN the VIEW the "C" drive.

I've decided I want to record (BURN) data from 3 different folders.  By HOLDING the "CTRL" key on my keyboad and clicking the directories one at a time, I have chosen to BURN the data from these 3 folders.  By clicking the "ADD" button, these 3 directories will be put in the recording (BURNING) session.

OK, now I'm in the MY DOCUMENT folder and I decided I wanted ALL the files in this directory.
By RIGHT CLICKING and choosing "SELECT ALL" then ALL of the files are highlighted and ready for you to click the ADD button to add these to your list of items to record (BURN).

All files are now selected

Notice that the amount of data to burn is far in the RED which means there is MORE data than what your CD-R will hold or store!  This means you will need to DELETE some of these files in order to "FIT" them onto your CD-R!

The HIGHLIGHTED files are the ones you've chosen to REMOVE from the list of files so that the remainder will fit onto your CD-R.

If you had a DVD-R burner, and you chose all of these files, you STILL have much more room to add even more files and folders....and they'd ALL fit onto 1 DVD-R!  To continue, click the NEXT button

To better identify this CD-R or DVD-R it is good practice to type in the DISC NAME.  You are limited to the number of characters!  To continue, click BURN.

Because I'm burning onto a CD-R and not a DVD-R and I am limited to the number of files do to the size and capacity on the CD-R that I am using, I have titled this CD-R to let me know where I started and stopped in the list.  "A - E" on this CD-R.

Each screen shows you the progression of the record (BURN) status, with the last screen shot showing you the BURN session is now complete.  Click the OK

Click NEXT

At this point, your CD-R or DVD-R drive has opened up, exposing the BURNED media.  Take the CD-R or DVD-R out, and STORE it in a JEWEL CASE

Click EXIT

The MAIN NERO screen re-appears.  In the UPPER RIGHT HAND CORNER, click the

"X" ICON

Nero closes, and you're all done!

Congratulations on BURNING a DATA CD-R or DVD-R!

Note, you have many more options with NERO, to be able to burn DVD-R movies, MUSIC CD's, COPY CD's and DVD's and so much more!
